A2L Refrigerant Transition Resource Guide

Welcome to our A2L Refrigerant Transition Resource Guide. Here, we'll keep you informed on the latest information regarding the transition to A2L refrigerants.

Manufacturers will no longer produce matched systems with 410A refrigerant after January 1st, 2025. There are no guarantees or timelines on how long the existing equipment will remain available.

New Era of Low GWP Refrigerants

The American Innovation & Manufacturing (AIM) Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to implement a phasedown of the production and consumption of HFCs by 2035. As part of this work, the EPA has published a rule that beginning January 1, 2025, the U.S. Federal Government will require Residential HVAC equipment to use refrigerants with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 700.

A2L Defined

ASHRAE 34 defines refrigerant classification. The first digit refers to toxicity. A is lower toxicity, and B is higher toxicity. The numbers 1, 2L, 2, and 3 refer to flammability. The lower the number, the lower the flammability. 2L is the lowest flammability classification. Refrigerants with this classification are difficult to ignite and non-explosive.

ASHRAE Classification of Refrigerants

Benefits of the Refrigerant Change
  • Environmental Impact: A2L Refrigerants have a lower Global Warming Potential compared to traditional Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) such as R-410A. This means their potential to contribute to global warming is significantly lower if released into the atmosphere.
  • Energy Efficiency: A2L Refrigerants often have better thermodynamic properties, which can lead to improved energy efficiency in cooling systems.

Meier Supply offers a range of training programs designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of HVACR industry professionals. Our training covers various topics, including the latest refrigerants and system technology advancements. We are excited to announce our upcoming A2L refrigerant classes, which will provide in-depth information on handling, safety, and efficiency related to A2L refrigerants. These classes aim to equip participants with the necessary skills to work effectively with these new refrigerants, ensuring compliance with current standards and enhancing overall system performance.

Refrigeration

The shift to A2L refrigerants on the refrigeration side, as detailed by Heatcraft, marks a significant change in industry standards. A2L refrigerants, which include options like R-454A, R-454C & R-455A, are characterized by their lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) compared to traditional refrigerants. This change aims to address environmental concerns while maintaining efficient cooling performance.

For contractors, this transition involves several key actions. Firstly, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the new refrigerants' properties, including their lower flammability risks and handling requirements. This involves adopting new safety protocols and ensuring proper training for handling these substances. Meier Supply offers A2L essentials training to equip contractors with the knowledge needed to manage these refrigerants effectively. This training covers essential safety practices, system adjustments, and regulatory compliance, ensuring that contractors can adapt seamlessly to the new standards while upholding safety and efficiency in their operations.
